Starcraft 2 Strategy Guide:
The Mutalisk Rush

One of the most popular Zerg strategies in Starcraft 2 is the Mutalisk Rush. These flying units move fast and are the optimal weapons for carrying out a perfect rush strategy.

Much like other Starcraft 2 rush strategies, the Mutalisk Rush focuses on speed. Your main objective is to build as many Mutalisks as possible and send them out against your opponent before they have a chance to construct any defenses against air attacks.

You will want to avoid sending out single Mutalisks to attack – they are much more effective in small packs. When you do this, their effectiveness truly is incredible. If you are looking to destroy enemy buildings, a pack of Mutalisks are necessary – a single unit will do almost no damage.

Ideally, you will want to construct around 7 Mutalisks to carry out this attack. Any less and you will just be wasting your time – your opponent will build defenses and just shoot you out of the sky like a fly.

Starcraft 2 Mutalisk Rush Strategy – 2 vs 2

The Mutalisk Rush is very effective when combined with a ground based attack like a Zealot Rush. The ground rush will slow down the defense building process just enough so you can sneak in your fleet of Mutalisk and take down the enemy in short order. Here’s how to get it done…

  1. Boost your economy – build about 14 drones, and make sure both extractors are functional while your spawning pool is being constructed.
  2. Make your partner develop Zealots in a hurry. They don’t need an economy as strong as yours – their main focus should be developing Zealots.
  3. Develop your Queen
  4. While your Queen is being developed, continue building your economy
  5. Share your resources with your partner as soon as you have enough – this will allow him to build Zealots a lot faster
  6. Consider trading minerals for Vesepene gas – this will allow you to develop more Mutalisks faster.
  7. Develop your Spire. At this point, you should have 8 Mutalisks ready to attack.

Then, just go for it!

The Mutalisk Rush is very effective against Zergs and Protoss, but not very effective against Terran – they just have too much anti air defense.

Starcraft 2 Mutalisk Rush Strategy – 1 vs 1

When using the Mutalisk Rush alone, it is essential that you slow down your enemy as much as possible. Using a Roach push is quite effective – here’s how…

Build…

  1. A Spawning Pool
  2. An Extractor
  3. An Overlord
  4. A Queen
  5. A Roach Warren

When all the above are complete, you can start developing roaches. By the time you have 6-12 roaches, you can move forward. Here’s what usually happens…

-          Your initial roach attack may be enough to kill your enemy or severely weaken him. If this happens, keep on doing the same thing until you finish the job!

-          If your initial rush does not significantly weaken your opponent, they will usually barricade themselves inside their base for protection.

In either case, you can use your own judgment as to when to send in your Mutalisks. If they barricade themselves in their base, it will be as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. It should only take about 5 Mutalisks to finish the whole job.

As with the 2 vs 2 strategy, this is not very effective against Terran. They will always build up anti air defense and will eliminate you with ease. If you are working against them, use a different strategy instead.

The Mutalisk Rush strategy is one of the most effective attacks in Starcraft 2. When it is executed properly, it works very well. But, if you get it wrong, it can go bad in a real hurry. If you are interested in using this strategy, you should consider practicing it with a partner in a 2 vs 2 situation so you have an extra layer of security. Then, when you become proficient, you can run it in a 1 vs 1 game and eliminate your
opponent with ease! This strategy is very easy to use, is very effective,
and will improve your Starcraft 2 skills in a hurry!
