Starcraft 2 Strategy Guide:
Hydralisk Anti-Protoss Build, Part 1

One of the most memorable units from Brood War was the Hydralisk. Together with the Zerglings they were the backbone of pretty much all of the Zerg battles. They also had the ability to morph into Lurkers, and were both cheap and fast to produce. Their only real weakness was their lack of any major health points.

But as we know the Zerg is an ever evolving race, and the Hydralisk is no exception. In Brood War they were both fast and strong, in Starcraft 2 they are still heavy hitters, but their speed has been turned down a notch or two. What this means is that they wont be able to escape from battles as easily as they used to, making your decisions on the battlefield that much more important.

The cost of making them has gone up as well, and their ability to turn into Lurkers is but a distant memory. So what does this mean exactly? Are they completely useless now? Of course not. Starcraft 2, just like its predecessor, aims to be a balanced game, with each unit having its counter-unit in one of the other races.

In this Starcraft 2 guide we will focus on how to utilize the Hydralisk in a Zerg vs. Protoss 1vs1 match. It will also work against Terran players that are doing the Banshee Rush.

Here is the Build Order:

1. Begin by sending your Drones to start harvesting, while saving one to hatch. Set the Hatcery to group one. Send your Overlord to the enemy’s main, and set it to group two. After that you’ll set the Drone rally point to an unused mineral patch.

2. Keep making Drones until you reach 10 supplies. After that you should make another Overlord. By the time it hatches, you should have enough resources to make three more Drones.

3. Once you reach 200 minerals you will build a Spawning Pool, another Drone, plus an Extractor.

4. Send three Drones to harvest from the newly built Extractor. Keep spawning Drones until you reach 15 supplies. Once you do, it’s time for another Overlord and Drone. By now your Pool should be close to ready so you can build a Queen. And you should have 16/18 and somewhere about 150 minerals.
